We have an exciting new event this weekend in NASCAR. I know my content is full of NASCAR content, but this is something new. You may be thinking how can a guy get so excited about watching cars turning left? Well, this week they’re doing more than turning left, they’ll be turning right as well. But this isn’t your typical road course event. Not only is this a street course, meaning that these are normal streets that passenger vehicles travel on, but this is on a United States Naval base, Naval Base Coronado in San Diego California.
There has been a significant amount of build up for this event. It’s in honor of the 250th anniversary of this great nation the United States of America. What better way to celebrate than stock cars and the world’s greatest Navy? There is a short film on Prime that features a few of NASCAR’s young stars competing in a series of challenges for the right of the ability to compete on the base. Now it is a little corny, but it is a fun watch and insightful to what challenges are present in the Navy and NASCAR.
I have seen some clips of some drivers talking about how technical this course is and the challenges it presents. Now this is the first time they are doing this race, but they have the track available to race on virtually and that’s where these drivers get their first look. Shane Van Gisbergen is easily NASCAR’s most dominant road racer, has made claims as to how difficult this race will be. He is obviously one to watch in this race but who else should we look out for?
Denny Hamlin is on a 3-race winning streak but has historically not been known as a top competitor on tracks with right hand turns, will he turn that luck around. Chase Elliott, Connor Zilisch, Tyler Reddick and AJ Allmendinger have all made names in one way shape or form on road courses will one of these guys shock the field and steal a win away from SVG? Will we get a different name up there? Tune in to find out.
This also brings up another interesting point. The In-Season Challenge begins next week as well. This is a bracket style competition much like March-Madness. Fans have the chance to make a bracket themselves and have a shot at a million dollars, that is if they have a perfect bracket. The driver who wins this bracket will take home 1 million dollars as well. There are a mix of different tracks and layouts so expect some upsets. Ty Gibbs was definitely a bit of a surprise winner last year so expect more of the same. Also, if you make a bracket and you heard it here first and you win, I think it’s only right that you give me a quarter of your winnings…
We are in for an exciting weekend this weekend followed by many others with the in-season challenge. What will drivers do to win the first race at a new track? What will they do to try to win 1 million dollars. Tune in to find out. The action starts this weekend on Sunday June 21st at 4 ET.
